Amazing 1902-S Half, MS67

1902-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Pryor. This 1902-S half dollar from the James Bennett Pryor Collection ranked among the important highlights of that collection, much as it does among coins from the Dale Friend Collection. In the Pryor catalog, Dave Bowers called this coin a "Memorable Gem" and wrote: "Very rare with this combination of high grade and superb quality. Where could you find another even close to this one." In January 1996, when the Pryor Collection was sold, this coin was PCGS certified MS66, and at the time it was only the second example so graded. Today, PCGS has certified six MS66 submissions, along with two as MS67. As always, it is virtually impossible to determine how many of those represent resubmissions.
A boldly detailed piece, Dale Friend acquired the Pryor Collection coin a dozen years ago, and today it remains tied for the finest certified. Both sides are brilliant with frosty silver luster and lovely pale gold toning. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (10/08).
Ex: Stack's (10/1975), lot 396; James Bennett Pryor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/1996), lot 287.
