1902-S Barber Half, Exceptional MS67+
Tied for Finest Certified
Ex: Duckor/Price

1902-S 50C MS67+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Price. The 1902-S Barber half is a famous condition rarity in Mint State, and only a small number survive in Gem or finer grades. The Duckor-Price coin is perhaps the best-known of the issue, where a trio of Plus-graded Superb Gems vie for finest-known recognition. The obverse has champagne and reddish-gold toning that does little to subdue the frosty mint luster, while the reverse exhibits deeper color, with intermingled champagne, gold, violet-brown, and iridescent toning.

Under strong magnification, faint roller lines are barely visible on the cheek. The parallel lines remain on many S-Mint Barber halves of the period, remnant from when the planchet stock was passed through the rolling mill to reduce its thickness. While striking pressure eliminates all but a ghost of the lines, the 1902-S is typically a bit lightly struck, which is seen also in minor weakness on the eagle's right (facing) talons and shoulder. Overall, the eye appeal and technical quality of this 1902-S half is unsurpassed. Population: 3 in 67 (3 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 67, 0 finer (3/20).
