Description

1902-S Barber Half, Exceptional MS67+
The Single Finest Certified, Ex: Duckor

1902-S 50C MS67+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Price. The 1902-S Barber half is a condition rarity in Mint State, and only a small number survive in Gem or finer grades, with a mere handful in MS67. The Duckor-Price coin is undoubtedly the finest known of the issue, being the only Superb Gem with an added Plus designation. The obverse has champagne and reddish-gold toning that does little to subdue the frosty mint luster, while the reverse exhibits deeper color, with intermingled champagne, gold, violet-brown, and iridescent toning. Faint roller lines on the cheek remain from planchet preparation; when the planchet stock was passed through the rolling mill to reduce its thickness, parallel grooves were introduced to the planchet surfaces. They remained visible on this piece due to inadequate striking pressure, which is seen also in minor weakness on the eagle's right (facing) talons and shoulder. Such roller marks are also frequently seen on San Francisco Mint Morgan dollars from this period. Overall, the eye appeal and technical quality of this 1902-S half is unsurpassed. Population: 3 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer (6/15).
