Description
1904 Half Dollar, MS66
Conditionally Rare
1904 50C MS66 NGC. In determining the rarity of just about
any issue in the Barber half series in Gem grades, mintage figures
can be disregarded. This was a commercial workhorse series, heavily
circulated and little collected; even common dates become rare in
the upper Mint State levels. The 1904 is a prime example. This
Philadelphia issue had a mintage of nearly 3 million coins, but is
genuinely rare at the MS65 grade level and anything finer is
exceedingly so. In MS66, the currently offered coin is tied with
just two others for the finest at NGC (6/15). This piece is boldly
struck, draped in milky golden and lilac patina. The underlying
surfaces display a hard, satiny brilliance with just a few
inconsequential marks on Liberty's cheek and neck.Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 4235.
