1904-S Half Dollar, Patinated MS66
Elusive Series Key in Mint State

1904-S 50C MS66 PCGS. The 1904-S Barber half dollar claims a low mintage of 553,038 pieces, but the issue is actually more difficult to locate than the low production figure would suggest. This date is the undisputed series rarity in Mint State grades, second only to the near-uncollectible 1892-O Micro O. David and John Feigenbaum write in their Complete Guide to Certified Barber Coinage that: "1904-S is everyone's favorite date in the half set. It wasn't always so. It took certification in 1986 ... to point out that it was so rare." PCGS and NGC have graded about 600 examples in all grades, only 51 of which are in Mint State.

Why is the 1904-S so rare? One possible reason is the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The banks where coins were stored were destroyed, homes and businesses were destroyed and the 1904-S had only been in circulation less than two years. Moreover, coins made back then in San Francisco tended to stay close to home. While it cannot be stated with certainty, the 1906 disaster is the one unique thing that might help to explain the rarity and higher prices of the 1904-S.

Glowing luster shines through the medium-intensity layer of bluish-gray, orange, yellow-gold, crimson, and electric-blue patination. The design elements are well-struck, including boldness on the leaves in Liberty's wreath, the obverse star radials, and most of the eagle's plumage. Only the upper-right corner of the shield and the claw and adjacent arrow feathers are a tad soft, as typical for the issue. Both sides are impeccably preserved. Population: 2 in 66, 3 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N10218)
