Description

1906 Barber Half Dollar, MS67
Tied for Finest Known, Ex: Duckor

1906 50C MS67 PCGS Secure. Ex: Duckor. This boldly defined 1906 half dollar is fully struck on the obverse, while the reverse shows slight merging on the right talons and the wing feathers right of the shield. The fields are satiny, with iridescent ice-blue and mint-green tinges. The devices are frosty and lustrous, showing a subtle cameo appearance if studied closely.

Population Data (4/15): This MS67 piece is tied with one other as finest at PCGS, and the finest at NGC is a sole MS66.

Heritage Commentary: According to the belief of many collectors, high-grade Barber half dollars are, beginning with the 1906 issue, generally a little easier to locate than many earlier dates, but not so. In the Price catalog, David Akers suggested this issue to be quite rare in MS65 or better, but more plentiful than the 1901 to 1905 P-mint issues. However, the PCGS Population Report pegs the 1906, in MS66 or finer condition, about on par with the 1901 through 1904, and rarer than the 1905. Series students are well aware of the high-grade rarity of the 1906, while less-seasoned collectors will learn that lesson when they begin the hunt.
