Description

1906-S Half Dollar, MS67
Only One Numerically Finer at PCGS

1906-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Shireman. A pale dusting of light lavender-gray and olive-gold toning, slightly deeper toward the margins, complements soft, satiny luster on each side of this remarkable Superb Gem. The obverse stars are sharp, and only trivial weakness is detectable on the eagle's right (facing) shoulder, as usual. A beautiful piece, devoid of detracting abrasions.

Population Data (4/15): By the numbers, this piece is one of four in MS67 at PCGS, with one MS68 coin finer. NGC has seen a single MS67, and one each in MS68 and MS69 finer. The MS68 PCGS coin is currently in the Dr. and Mrs. Peter K. Shireman Collection of Barber halves, the current highest-rated Registry Set. According to commentary by the owner, that coin is the same as the NGC MS69 piece, meaning that there are only two actual coins finer than the present example.

Heritage Commentary: Like many dates in the Barber half series, especially branch mint issues, the 1906-S is obtainable in grades through MS64, but finer pieces pose a significant challenge for the advanced collector. This is only the third time we have offered an MS67 example in the past 20 years.
