1906-S Half Dollar, Remarkable MS67
Ex: Price/Friend

1906-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Price. There is no shortage of impressive 1906-S half dollars, led by a handful of Superb Gems that have appeared in the finest Barber half collections over the years. This is one of the truly memorable coins, and carries a notable provenance. It was acquired by Dale Friend from the fine Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection that David Akers sold in May 1997. Only the Hugon coin is clearly better, currently certified MS68 PCGS.

This is an almost equally outstanding Barber half, with russet, greenish-gold, pale blue, and violet toning, and it exudes exemplary surface quality. Both sides display bold, frosted silver luster that shines through the attractive, natural toning. There are no post-Mint distractions, while a few faint horizontal roller marks remain at the eagle's lower tailfeathers, talon, and arrow fletchings from the original planchet. David Akers commented: "For those who love superbly toned, immaculate quality, well struck Barber half dollars, this coin will be a particular treat." It is destined to grace an exceptional Registry Set or advanced collection. Population: 4 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 67, 1 finer (3/20).
