Description
1906-S Barber Half Dollar, MS67
Ex: Shireman-Gardner
1906-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Shireman. A pale dusting of
light lavender-gray and olive-gold toning, slightly deeper toward
the margins, complements soft, satiny luster on each side of this
remarkable Superb Gem. The obverse stars are sharp, and only
trivial weakness is detectable on the eagle's right (facing)
shoulder, as usual. This is a beautiful piece, devoid of detracting
abrasions.By the numbers, this 1906-S is one of five examples in MS67 (1 of those is 67+) at PCGS, with one MS68 coin finer. NGC reports a single MS67 and one in MS68 (11/24). Like many dates in the Barber half series -- especially branch mint issues -- the 1906-S is obtainable in grades through MS64, but finer pieces pose a significant challenge for the advanced collector. This is only the eighth time we have offered an MS67 or finer example in the past 25+ years, including one duplicate listing and the 2015 appearance of this very coin in the Eugene H. Gardner Collection.
