Stunning 1906-S Half Dollar, MS67

1906-S 50C MS67 PCGS. Ex: Price. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake is known to most everyone, and this Superb Gem is certainly an excellent memento of the event. If only coins could talk! Dale Friend acquired his 1906-S half from the incredible Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection that David Akers sold in May 1997. In the Price catalog, Akers called this piece "one of the finest known." It compares favorably with the Eliasberg coin, and it is clearly finer than the Pryor coin that Dave Bowers called "one of the very finest 1906-S half dollars in existence." Only the Hugon coin is clearly better, and that coin is now PCGS certified MS68!
An outstanding piece with russet, greenish-gold, pale blue, and violet toning. The underlying surfaces exhibit frosty silver luster with faint horizontal roller marks on each side, remaining from the original planchet. Akers further commented: "For those who love superbly toned, immaculate quality, well struck Barber half dollars, this coin will be a particular treat." Population: 4 in 67, 1 finer (10/08).
Ex: Dr. Thaine Price Collection (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 169.
