Description

1906-S Half Dollar, Extraordinary MS67
Tied for Second-Finest, Ex: Price/Friend

1906-S 50C MS67 PCGS. Ex: Price/Friend. An outstanding piece with russet, greenish-gold, pale blue, and violet toning. The underlying surfaces exhibit frosty silver luster with faint horizontal roller marks on each side, remaining from the original planchet. David Akers commented: "For those who love superbly toned, immaculate quality, well struck Barber half dollars, this coin will be a particular treat."

The coin has an impressive provenance. Dale Friend acquired this 1906-S half from the incredible Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection that David Akers sold in May 1997. In the Price catalog, Akers called the coin "one of the finest known." 18 years later, the coin still compares favorably with the Eliasberg coin, and it is clearly finer than the Pryor coin that Dave Bowers called "one of the very finest 1906-S half dollars in existence." Only the Hugon coin is clearly better, PCGS certified MS68. The PCGS Population is unchanged since this coin last appeared at public auction: 4 in 67, 1 finer (9/15).
