Description
Finest Known (MS68) 1909-S Barber Half Dollar
1909-S 50C MS68 NGC. While available in lower grades (with a mintage of 1.7 million pieces), the 1909-S is scarce at the Mint State level, and it is especially challenging in Gem and better grades. However, in this exalted grade, it is unprecedented. This is the finest coin graded by either of the major services, and it is also the finest known, a claim we expect will stand from now on. Sparkling mint luster is seen over each side, and is evident even through the light overlay of champagne-golden toning that turns to mottled gold at the margins. The only mark that could be used as a pedigree identifier in the future is a tiny abrasion located approximately 2 mm. behind Liberty's nostril. An incredible coin that should be examined by anyone interested in the Barber half dollar series. Another finest known from the incredible Hugon Collection.Ex: FUN Sale (Heritage, 1/98), lot 6947, where it brought $12,075.(#6518) (Registry values: N7079)
