Description

Desirable 1911-S/S Half Dollar, MS66

1911-S 50C MS66 PCGS. Repunched Mintmark. CAC. FS-501. The mintmark is slightly repunched, with doubling visible at the left edge of the lower serif. The variety is not noted on the PCGS holder. This doubled mintmark was unlisted in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia. Fivaz and Stanton mention that it is a recently discovered variety, listed in the fourth edition of the Cherrypicker's Guide.
Not only is Dale Friend's example the finest currently known representative of the Repunched Mintmark, but it is also a top quality piece for the date. The finest 1911-S is the MS67 that we sold in the Hugon Collection, followed by this piece, the Eliasberg coin, and the Price coin, all similar in quality. The present example is a boldly struck Premium Gem with frosty luster beneath delightful gray-brown and iridescent toning on the obverse, with lighter ivory and gold on the reverse. Population: 7 in 66, 1 finer (10/08) for all varieties, including a single MS65 coin that is identified as the Repunched Mintmark variety.
Ex: Dennis Nagy.
