    Description

    1915 Barber Half, MS66+
    Sole Finest Certified, Ex: Duckor

1915 50C MS66+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor. A faint die crack connects the bust tip to star 13 on this Premium Gem, sharply struck from otherwise perfect dies. The surfaces are frosty and highly lustrous, showing generous mint brilliance. Delicate gold toning on the obverse and deeper green-gold and iridescent toning on the reverse enhance the remarkable eye appeal.

Population Data (4/15): This remarkable piece ranks as the sole finest certified. PCGS shows three other examples in MS66, but none have received the Plus designation. NGC reports a lone MS66.

Heritage Commentary: With just 138,000 coins minted, the 1915 Barber half has the second-lowest production total of any issue in the series. Above MS65, the 1915 is extremely rare. The 1893-S, represented in MS66 by just one PCGS coin, the 1912, with four Premium Gems certified, and the lower-mintage 1914, with three so-graded examples known, are the only comparable condition rarities of all the Barber half issues. Many spectacular coins trace their origin to the Duckor Collection, but this 1915 is one of the most important, a centerpiece for an advanced collection.

    Provenance: Denver ANA (Bowers and Merena, 8/2006), lot 3401; Boston Signature (Heritage, 8/2010), lot 3243.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24NR, PCGS# 6532)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
