Description

1908-O Barber Half, MS67+
Condition Census Rarity
Beautifully Toned and Luminous

1908-O 50C MS67+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Among Barber half dollars, the Duckor Collection set a standard for high quality that many collectors strive to match. Two different Superb Gem 1908-O half dollars have pedigrees that include Duckor, one of which was previously in the Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection. This Plus-designated, CAC-approved Superb Gem is finer. Plated on PCGS CoinFacts, this is the only Plus-graded MS67 coin known, and the only finer pieces are an MS68 at PCGS and another at NGC, which may or may not be the same coin. This remarkable Registry Set candidate is high in the Condition Census of 1908-O Barber halves.

The immediate appeal of this coin is the vivid original toning that casts the obverse in mottled green-gold and amber hues and the reverse is concentric rainbow color, backlit by frosty original mint luster. Careful study of each side fails to reveal abrasions, even while the typical New Orleans strike weakness is seen on the eagle's right (facing) wing junction; the talons and fletchings are sharp. Population: 15 in 67 (1 in 67+), 1 finer. CAC: 10 in 67, 1 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
