Branch Mint Proof 1893-O Barber Quarter

1893-O 25C PR66 Uncertified. Branch Mint Proof, in our opinion. At first glance, one immediately knows there is something special about this coin. The fields are deeply mirrored, the devices fully struck, and heavy frost is present over the design elements. All this is recognizable through the deep, multiple layers of toning that are overlaid on each side.
The coin is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter of verification as a branch mint proof written by Walter Breen and dated May 10, 1991. In the letter, he states in part, "This certifies that I have examined the accompanying coin and that I unhesitatingly declare it genuine and as described below. It is an 1893 O quarter, Encyclopedia 4131, traces of repunching within left part of mintmark, Proof, and the only one of this denomination and date so far reported. Compared to business strikes, this stands out from the crowd: from brilliantly polished dies on a polished blank; all devices, legends, and stars, needle sharp; borders less beveled than on business strikes. Compared to other O mint proofs of the period, this is an excellent match; viewed obverse only, it would not excite comment among Philadelphia proofs, being again an excellent match."
