    1894-S Quarter, MS64
    Captivating Prooflike Fields
    Ex: Clapp-Eliasberg

1894-S 25C MS64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. The mintmark is set far right. The quality of this piece is incredible, not only for the Choice grade level but for the issue itself; boldly rendered design elements are set against a backdrop of beautiful prooflike fields that deliver noticeable cameo contrast beneath a thin veil of iridescent gold toning. In the Eliasberg catalog, the cataloger wrote of this coin: "If the term branch mint Proof is applicable in this series, certainly this coin qualifies."

Population Data (9/15): PCGS lists 59 in MS64 (one MS64+) with 23 finer; NGC has seen 61 pieces in this grade (one MS64+) with 13 finer. This is among five in this grade with the CAC green approval.

Heritage Commentary: Perhaps one of the most eye-appealing circulation strikes of the entire 1894-S quarter issue, this outstanding prooflike specimen also has an impressive pedigree, having been included in just three landmark collections in its century-plus of existence. This is only this piece's second public auction appearance, and one can only speculate when its next owner will be able to part with it.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the San Francisco Mint by J.M. Clapp (11/1895); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1554.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 23Y3, PCGS# 5609)
