    Impressive 1896-O Quarter, MS67

    1896-O 25C MS67 NGC. The 1896 New Orleans quarter, coming from a mintage of 4.484 million pieces, is available in the lower circulated grades, but becomes very scarce in the Fine and above levels of preservation. David Lawrence, in his second edition The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters, provides the following rarity levels for the '96-O:

    F/VF, R.4;
    XF, R.4;
    AU, R.5; and
    MS, R.6.

    NGC and PCGS have certified approximately 75 examples in Mint State grades, mostly between MS62 and MS64.
    This Superb Gem is a memorable coin that represents one of the classic key-dates in the Barber quarter series. While most collectors, novice and advanced, recognize the 1896-S as the important rarity in the series, its New Orleans Mint cousin is every bit as elusive in top condition, especially with a full strike.
    Nearly every design feature is boldly rendered, including the star details and all of the hair strands on the obverse and the eagle details on the reverse. Only the arrow feathers near the eagle's claw show slight weakness. Each side of this coin has impeccable surfaces with only minuscule impediments on Liberty's cheek. The central obverse and reverse have creamy luster with peripheral gold, magenta, and electric-blue on the obverse and a narrower ring of the same color palette on the reverse. This piece yields impressive technical quality and aesthetic appeal. Census: 1 in 67, 1 finer (10/08).
