Description

Lustrous MS62 1896-S Quarter

1896-S 25C MS62 NGC. Chronologically, the 1896-S is the first of the "Big Three" San Francisco dates in the series, and while its mintage is the highest of the three at 188,039 pieces, it was not recognized immediately as a rarity and thus was less saved than the 1913-S. As a result, anything finer than this MS62 example is conditionally rare. The present piece has excellent luster, mainly silver with patches of blue-green and peach that appear mostly at the margins. Abrasions at Liberty's jaw and cheekbone and slide marks on the obverse combine to account for the grade. Census: 3 in 62, 26 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N4719)
