    Description

Rare High Grade 1896-S Barber Quarter, A Dazzling Prooflike MS64

1896-S 25C MS64 PCGS. Obverse Die Two, Reverse Die Two. The 1896-S is one of the few Barber quarter issues that has been counterfeited or altered. Thus, the need to know which die this coin was struck from: the 1 in the date is centered over the right edge of a denticle, and the mintmark is closer to the R in QUARTER. Only 188,039 pieces were struck of the '96-S and it is a legitimate rarity in XF and better grades with Mint State pieces rated as R.6. As with many of the known high grade survivors, this piece shows dazzling, prooflike fields. Additionally, the striking details are very crisp on each side. There are only a couple of minor abrasions on the figure of Liberty that keep this piece from a full Gem rating. Brilliant throughout. Near-Gem 1896-S quarters are seldom available in the marketplace, and this exceptional coin will surely find its way into a major collection of Barber quarters very soon. Population: 13 in 64, 10 finer (2/05).(#5615) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23Y9, PCGS# 5615)

    Weight: 6.25 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
