Important Gem Uncirculated 1896-S Barber Quarter
1896-S 25C MS65 NGC. Following on the heels of the magnificent Hugon specimen which realized an impressive $51,750 in last month's FUN Sale, we are equally please to offer another Gem representative of this well known Barber Quarter rarity. Like the previous offering, this coin can be attributed as obverse # 1 and reverse # 1. The 1 in the date is almost perfectly centered over a denticle, the mintmark is high and centered between the R and D. Both sides offer an intense satiny sheen that is totally void of toning and major design elements that are sharply struck down to the finest detail. Die clashing within Liberty's ear seems to be nearly diagnostic of the occasional high grade survivor. Clusters of die striations are seen sporadically over the reverse fields. The 1896-S Quarter has long been considered one of the three key issues in the Barber Quarter series, along with the even more challenging 1901-S and the lower mintage but less difficult 1913-S. Prior to our good fortune in offering two Gem examples within a 60 day period, Heritage had sold just a single MS65 and one MS66 during the previous decade. Needless to say, an outstanding opportunity for the specialist in this widely collected series. Population: 5 in 65, 1 finer (1/05).(#5615) (Registry values: N7079)
