    Description

    1896-S Quarter Dollar, MS65
    Exceptional Key Date, Condition Rarity

1896-S 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. It is not unusual for decades to pass without Heritage offering a Gem or finer 1896-S quarter -- such is the high-grade rarity of this San Francisco issue. Those few coins that do exist in comparable grade are tightly held in advanced collections. The 1896-S quarter has long been recognized as one of the three key issues in the Barber quarter series, not quite as rare as the 1901-S, but more challenging than the lower-mintage (but more readily available) 1913-S.

The present coin is housed in an old green label holder, now with the label turned yellow by exposure to light. It is one of only four coins to receive the important CAC endorsement at this level. Frosty and virtually untoned except for some faint, dappled olive-gray and ice-blue patina, cartwheel silver luster radiates from both sides of the pinpoint-sharp surfaces. Destined for one of the finest Barber quarter sets, either as an upgrade to an existing collection or as the cornerstone of an emerging new set. Population: 10 in 65, 2 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 0 finer (9/16).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23Y9, PCGS# 5615)

    Weight: 6.25 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
