Important 1896-S Barber Quarter Rarity, MS 64 NGC

1896-S MS 64 NGC. One of the big three among S-mint Barber quarters, the 1896-S is an elusive issue in Mint State. This important near-gem specimen combines two radically different toning schemes on its obverse and reverse. Deep patination swirls over nearly the entire obverse and reveals variegated hues that include crimson, green, yellow, gold, purple, and cobalt-blue. This toning scheme still allows for full appreciation of the underlying cartwheel luster and mint frost is readily evident in a few isolated areas of color recession across Liberty's lower neck. Conversely, the reverse is nearly 50% brilliant with speckled patches of charcoal, electric-blue, and russet toning scattered about. The impression is nearly complete with none of the mushiness that so often plagues the eagle's neck and tail feathers. While inexperienced collectors may view this coin's deep toning as an impairment to its eye appeal, we proudly report that the surfaces are free of blemishes. An immensely important opportunity for the Barber quarter specialist. Population: 6 in 64, 5 finer (6/99). From the Louis S. Joseph Collection. (NGC ID# 23Y9, PCGS# 5615)

    Weight: 6.25 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
