Key 1896-S Barber Quarter, A Prooflike MS 63 Specimen

1896-S 25C MS 63 PCGS. The first of the "big three" among S-mint Barber quarters, the 1896-S was produced to the extent of only 188,039 pieces. When William Puckall, A. C. Gies, and Wayte Raymond accumulated rolls of Mint State Barber quarters in the 1930s, they were unable to locate more than two rolls of this issue. As such, it seems likely that few of these coins were spared the rigors of circulation. When Mint State coins do appear at auction, they are apt to be well struck, but only a small minority of such coins display a prooflike finish. With frosty devices and shimmering reflectivity in the fields, the present example is certainly among the most appealing '96-S quarters extant. Delicate champagne-tan peripheral iridescence is noted on both sides, but the balance of the surfaces are devoid of toning. This coin is one of the consignor's favorites, and, with premium technical quality for the grade and stunning visual effects, this specimen is clearly a highlight of the Church Collection.
