Description

1897 Quarter Dollar, MS67
Among the Finest Known

1897 25C MS67 PCGS. Claiming a mintage in excess of 8 million coins, the 1897 Barber quarter is one of the more plentiful issues of the period from an absolute standpoint, but like most dates in the series, it becomes scarce at the Gem grade level and is rarely seen finer. This piece is tied with just three others as the finest certified at PCGS, and is rivaled only by a single numerically equal example at NGC (10/14). Satiny luster shines through shades of yellow-gold, lavender-gray, and aquamarine toning on each side, with no obvious signs of contact observed upon close examination. The strike is bold throughout, though some minor die lapping is noted in the eagle's feathers around the shield and behind Liberty's ear.(Registry values: N2998)
