Description

1898-S Barber Quarter, MS68
Pristine and Visually Exceptional
The Sole Finest Example at PCGS

1898-S 25C MS68 PCGS. The 1898-S Barber quarter is significantly scarcer than both its New Orleans and Philadelphia counterparts, a fact that becomes all the more apparent in Mint State, particularly the high end of that range. We have seen a Mint State coin on only 44 prior occasions, all grades tallied, most of which were coins grading no finer than MS65. The only example we have previously offered that is in any way close to the quality of the current specimen was a lone MS67 PCGS CAC coin that we sold in the Eugene H. Gardner Collection (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 30425, which realized $18,800.

The present coin is finer than the Gardner piece. It is the sole finest 1898-S Barber quarter at PCGS, and it is tied with a lone NGC specimen in the grade for finest known overall. For Registry collectors, there is simply no alternative. Glistening, frosty mint luster cascades over virtually flawless surfaces, with vivid ocean-blue, lavender, mint-green, and light golden hues adorning the eye appeal. A sharp strike rounds out an essentially perfect Barber quarter. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (10/23).(Registry values: N7079)
