Description

Gem 1898-S Quarter Rarity, Intriguing Repunched Mintmark Variety

1898-S/S 25C MS 65 NGC. Repunched Mintmark. In his Encyclopedia, Breen mentions an 1898-S/O variety (Breen-4159). We caution bidders, however, that this overmintmark is distinct from the repunched mintmark variety that David Lawrence notes in his 1994 book on Barber quarters. Philippine hoards explain the relative availability of this issue in XF and AU grades. Mint State examples, on the other hand, are scarce and underrated by all but the most knowledgeable Barber quarter collectors. This is a starkly prooflike example with frosty devices and glistening fields. Silver-gray patina overlays both sides with dappled crimson-russet iridescence that is more widely distributed on the reverse. Neither the striking quality nor the surface preservation are worthy of criticism. This coin shares the MS 65 grade level with only six other coins at both NGC and PCGS, and it is bettered by a mere four examples (7/00).
