    Description

    1899-O Barber Quarter, MS67
One of the Three Finest Known

1899-O 25C MS67 PCGS. CAC. The 1899-O Barber quarter is more than twice as scarce as its Philadelphia counterpart, and is only slightly more plentiful than the 1899-S, which is considered a semikey date in high grade. In Mint State, the 1899-O is marginally available in grades through MS64, but becomes genuinely rare at the Gem level. The present Superb Gem is tied with one other for the finest at PCGS, and compares favorably to a single NGC coin in this grade (6/15). Both sides show an array of lavender-gray and pale blue toning with hints of silvery brilliance escaping on the reverse. The surfaces are seemingly perfect, and were the coin struck a little sharper, it might have garnered an MS68 grade. As is typical for this New Orleans issue, some striking weakness appears on the right side of the eagle and on select obverse stars. However, the exceptional eye appeal prevails.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23YH, PCGS# 5623)
