    1900-O Quarter, Satiny MS68
    Ex: Clapp, Eliasberg
    Among the Few Finest Known

1900-O 25C MS68 NGC. CAC. Pale lilac and golden patina runs over satiny surfaces that show stunning preservation, among the finest imaginable of the issue. Another prize formerly in the famed Eliasberg Collection, and pedigreed to the 1900 New Orleans Mint.

Population Data (4/15): The finest certified of this issue at PCGS are 10 submissions in MS66 (three MS66+), one in MS67, and one incredible MS68+ coin, the latter technically besting this MS68 NGC piece, which was for many years the sole finest known. This piece is still the lone MS68 at NGC, with second-finest one each in MS67 and MS67 ★ .

Heritage Commentary: Besides its impeccable pedigree and preservation, this 1900-O Barber quarter is unusual and interesting for the clash marks, a phenomenon seldom seen on Barber coinage.

Consignor Commentary: The Eliasberg coin, graded raw MS67 in the catalog, although David Bowers notes the coin could possibly grade MS68 or even MS69! Also mentioned was evidence of die clash marks particularly noticeable below Liberty's chin on the obverse (possibly leading to die buckling accounting for the weak strike on star 11). Beautiful light toning. Bowers felt this might be the finest known. Perhaps so at the time, but other rivals seem to have emerged since then. It is still among the finest graded.

Provenance: Purchased by John M. Clapp directly from the New Orleans Mint (1900); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1571; later, purchased from John Feigenbaum at David Lawrence (11/2001).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23YL, PCGS# 5626)
