Description
Important, Conditionally Rare 1901-O Quarter, MS66 PCGS
1901-O 25C MS66 PCGS. Type Three Reverse. Per David Lawrence (1994), the 1901-O is considered the seventh rarest Barber Quarter in Mint State. One variety exists with noticeable doubling on the reverse, but this is a "regular dies" specimen. Both sides of this important Premium-Gem quality condition rarity are overlaid in satiny mint luster, the texture that usually accompanies most '01-O Quarters. Beautiful, concentric tones of turquoise-blue and deep magenta-gold border each side, the centers are essentially untoned. The surfaces are equally free of bothersome striking incompleteness with full centrils visible on the stars and sharp detail on the shield and eagle's wings. A couple of small abrasions show on Liberty's neck and one tiny one is also visible on her cheek. These are mentioned only to help the future Barber enthusiast identify the pedigree of this important specimen. Both major grading services report four coins in MS66, and there are only two finer at PCGS (11/04).(#5629) (Registry values: N4719)
