Description

1901-S Barber Quarter, AU58
Rare So Fine

1901-S 25C AU58 NGC. The 1901-S is the rarest date in the Barber half dollar series. Not the lowest mintage, though, as the 1913-S coin's mintage of 40,000 pieces is lower. But the 1901-S circulated to a greater extent, and the vast majority of its surviving population grades below VF. In fact, an inordinate number of coins are AG or worse. The 1901-S is decidedly rare in any grade XF or higher, and Mint State pieces are usually acquired only by the most well-heeled collectors.

Offered here is an AU58 coin -- one of just seven so-graded by NGC and PCGS combined. Hints of amber toning appear in the margins, but most of the surfaces are brilliant, with a trace of wear that leaves ample satiny luster present. Additionally, the strike is nearly full even in the usual trouble spots. Perhaps a touch of softness on the fletchings is notable, but nothing else. NGC Census: 5 in 58, 12 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N4719)
