Description

1901-S Quarter, Originally Toned VF20
Seldom Encountered Any Finer

1901-S 25C VF20 PCGS. An unrecognized rarity in its immediate post-mintage years, nearly all examples of the 1901-S entered circulation without foreknowledge or regard for its impending status as the hands-down key to the Barber quarter series. Just 72,664 pieces were struck, and West Coast commerce easily assimilated the scant mintage.

This attractive survivor is especially sharp for the assigned grade, with bold definition on the central devices and all of the letters of LIBERTY visible. The rims and dentils on both sides are deeply struck and ideal for the VF grade. Rich gunmetal-gray toning covers both sides, with areas of deep charcoal-gray in the protected areas of the raised motifs. Pleasing for the assigned grade, and deserving of the strong demand this key-date coin will undoubtedly receive. Population: 4 in 20, 74 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
