Extremely Scarce 1901-S Quarter, VF30 PCGS

1901-S 25C VF30 PCGS. While the 1913-S boasts a lower mintage than the 1901-S (40,000 pieces vs. 72,664 pieces), almost the entire delivery of '01-S quarters slipped into circulation before there was a widespread interest in collecting mintmarks that did not generally begin until around 1909. As such, the latter issue is the undisputed king of this popular, widely collected series. The 1901-S, even in a well-worn grade such as AG, Good, or VG is still a significant find, and examples in VF and better become extremely scarce. As of March 2005, PCGS and NGC combined have certified only six examples in VF30, the grade of the piece we offer here.
This example has semi-bright silver-gray surfaces with faint hints of reddish-gold. The design elements display nice definition, with both LIBERTY and E PLURIBUS UNUM being bold, and most of the vertical and horizontal lines in the shield showing. The surfaces are relatively clean and devoid of significant marks. Just a few minute abrasions are visible on Liberty's cheek and neck, and a minor pinscratch extends from beneath Liberty's ear to the rim between stars 3 and 4. This is an excellent specimen that will fit comfortably into a circulated mid-grade Barber quarter set. Population: 2 in 30, 41 finer (3/05).(#5630) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23YR, PCGS# 5630)
