    Description

Condition Census 1901-S Barber Quarter Rarity, MS 67 PCGS

1901-S 25C MS 67 PCGS. The Superb Gem representative of this issue that sold as lot 1575 in the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 4/97) was obtained directly from the San Francisco Mint at the time of issue, as was this spectacular example. A simply extraordinary coin irrespective of date, the surfaces are intensely lustrous with a richly frosted texture. Swirls of olive-gray, silver, and pink patina intermingle over both sides. Sharply struck throughout, the features are devoid of even the most trivial surface blemish. The San Francisco Mint delivered only 72,664 quarters in 1901. Although the 1913-S has a lower original mintage (40,000 pieces), the '01-S was preserved in fewer numbers, making it the premier condition rarity in the Barber quarter series. NGC and PCGS combined report only three coins in MS 67, with a lone MS 68 NGC specimen finer (3/01).
This is part of a four-coin consignment of 1901-S coinage (dime, quarter, half dollar, dollar) offered in this catalog, obtained by a visitor to the San Francisco Mint a century ago, and held together in the family since then. (NGC ID# 23YR, PCGS# 5630)
