Select 1901-S Barber Quarter--The Key to the Series
1901-S 25C MS63 PCGS. This is an uncommonly attractive coin for the assigned grade whose surfaces do not reveal an excessive number of abrasions. A few wispy slidemarks are noted on Liberty's cheek, but the balance of the features are smooth. The luster is a trifle subdued, both sides being mostly slate-gray in appearance with some golden tinting around the peripheries. Every feature is sharply impressed--an uncommon feature for a Barber Quarter of any date. The 1901-S is the undisputed key to this turn-of-the-century Quarter series. Although fewer S-mint coins were delivery in 1913, the 1901-S (72,664 pieces produced) was preserved in far fewer numbers. We last offered a similarly graded representative of this issue as lot 5961 in our August 2001 Atlanta ANA Signature Sale. That coin realized $24,725.
