Description
The Pittman 1902-O Barber Quarter, MS66
1902-O 25C MS66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Pittman. In the second edition of The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters, David Lawrence wrote, "Three similar mint mark positions identified in the First Edition. Since then I have also seen a coin with a very weak mint mark, though the surrounding area was decently struck. This leads me to believe it was weakly punched in the die." David Akers made a similar comment about this coin in the Pittman catalog, "Very weak, barely visible mintmark, the result of being weakly punched into the die since the coin is otherwise sharply struck." Alternatively, a filled die, with grease or another substance clogging the O mintmark in the die would yield similar weakness. The high mintage of almost 5 million coins did little to provide a supply of high grade pieces for current day collectors. PCGS has certified a mere 98 submissions of this date with an average grade of just 51. The Pittman coin, conservatively graded there as Choice Uncirculated, is actually a Premium Gem that is tied for the finest that PCGS has ever put in a holder. This attractive and highly lustrous piece has rose, gold, lilac, and sea-green toning with pristine surfaces and exceptional eye appeal. Population: 6 in 66, none finer (6/09).
