    1908-S Quarter, MS67
    Underrated Rarity in High Grades

1908-S 25C MS67 NGC. Variegate slate-blue, violet-gray, and olive toning adorns each side of this Superb Gem -- an extreme rarity in this condition. The peripheries are strongly struck, though the centers display incompleteness on Liberty's headband and the eagle's shield and leg feathers. Frosted luster radiates softly through the patina, illuminating virtually flawless surfaces.

Population Data (9/15): This Superb Gem is tied for finest with one other submission at NGC. PCGS lists two in MS67 and one MS68 finer.

Heritage Commentary: The 1908-S has the 10th-lowest mintage in the Barber quarter series with a production of just 784,000 coins. David Akers described this as a "very scarce issue in all mint state grades and a rare one in Gem condition. In fact, one would be considerably more likely to to be able to locate a Gem 1913-S Quarter than another 1908-S" of comparable quality. Notice that NGC and PCGS show similar or even lower certification totals for the 1908-S compared to the key-date 1913-S in MS65 or better.

    Provenance: Purchased from Bill Nagle (1/2001).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23ZF, PCGS# 5652)
