Description

1909-D Quarter, MS67
Tied for Finest Certified
Ex: Eliasberg

1909-D 25C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. With no noticeable abrasions and swirling cartwheel luster, the surfaces are indicative of the numismatic beauty that resides at the Superb Gem level. Essentially lavender-gray, the surfaces reveal crescents of orange and olive-gold around the obverse border. Yet another marvelous Barber quarter from the Gardner Collection that is housed in an old green label holder with the CAC green approval label and the Eliasberg pedigree.

Population Data (4/15): The finest graded are four MS67 at PCGS and one MS67 at NGC. This is one of two in this grade with the CAC approval.

Heritage Commentary: A common date through the Choice grade level, the 1909-D quarter becomes scarce in MS65, and finer pieces are decidedly rare. In MS67, only a small handful of examples are known for the most committed collectors.

Consignor Commentary: The Eliasberg coin, and a lovely piece with unmarked fields and smooth, even, natural toning. Not quite fully struck up, with some of the stars on the obverse exhibiting flatness as well as both of the eagle's claws on the reverse. A note in the Eliasberg catalog highlighted "an interesting die break with some cuds or 'islands' seen at the lower left of the neck truncation, with another, possibly related, at the right, extending to star 13."
