    Description

    1912-S Barber Quarter, MS68
Tied With One Other for Finest Certified
    Ex: Eliasberg

1912-S 25C MS68 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. This beautiful Superb Gem specimen exhibits an even endowment of silver-gray toning with steel-lilac shades over the high points. We can find neither distractions nor worthwhile post-production pedigree markers on the clean surfaces.

Population Data (4/15): This piece is the sole finest at NGC. While PCGS also an MS68 in its finest slot, we doubt whether that coin can match the present coin in terms of aesthetic appeal.

Heritage Commentary: The San Francisco Mint's production of quarters in 1912 lagged far behind that of its Philadelphia counterpart (708,000 versus 4.4 million pieces, respectively). While the latter issue is understandably more common into the lower reaches of Mint State preservation, both the 1912 and the 1912-S are elusive above the MS65 level.

Consignor Commentary: The Eliasberg coin, and a magnificent specimen of a difficult date in high grade. For a long time alone atop the condition charts, it has now been equaled by one other at PCGS. There are only five other coins in MS67 supporting these two. The Eliasberg catalog mentions roughness in the area of the second S in STATES, and under high magnification it is easily seen partially filling the upper loop of the S. Something caused this, and if I let my imagination run wild it looks somewhat like a misaligned S, even though I do not think this is theoretically possible. Wonderfully fresh and original.

    Provenance: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 4/1997), lot 1608; Philadelphia Signature (Heritage, 8/2000), lot 5858.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23ZT, PCGS# 5663)
