    Description

    1913-S Quarter, MS64
One of the Keys to the Series

1913-S 25C MS64 PCGS. CAC. The survival of numerous high-Mint State 1913-S quarters is due, we believe, to the furor that surrounded the introduction of the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cents four years earlier in and around San Francisco. Due to the low mintage of the 1909-S VDB cents, even casual collectors and neophytes soon learned that that tiny "S" mintmark could mean tidy profits. When the 1913-S quarters were introduced, despite their series-low mintage of only 40,000 coins, more were saved than of the earlier S-mint Barber keys, the 1901-S and 1896-S.
The present near-Gem 1913-S shows largely silver-white surfaces with a light peppering of russet patina, still presenting more brilliant than not. Liberty's cheek shows one minor scrape in the center, but there are few marks otherwise. Minor strike weakness appears on the eagle's right (facing) claw. The eye appeal is excellent throughout both sides, making this piece a potential capstone in a fine Barber quarter set. Population: 18 in 64, 32 finer (11/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 23ZW, PCGS# 5666)
