    Description

    1913-S Quarter, Satiny MS64
    Lowest Mintage in Series

1913-S 25C MS64 PCGS. The 1913-S ranks first in the Barber quarter series in terms of lowest mintage. Only 40,000 pieces were struck, compared to the much better-known key, the 1901-S, that had a mintage of 72,664 pieces. Traditional wisdom has it that the 1913-S is usually available in low grades and even a number of high-grade pieces can be found when a collector wants one. We have not found the second part of that to be true. We have only sold on MS64 coin at public auction in the past seven years, and in that same time period only five pieces have been sold by all the coin auction companies combined. These numbers tend to reinforce the unavailability one would expect from this issue that has a mere 18 coins certified by PCGS in MS64 (6/13). Unlike most S-mint silver coins, this piece has more subdued satiny mint luster rather than the thick mint frost expected. Strike details are strong throughout, and each side is brilliant.
