    Gem 1913-S Barber Quarter
    Thickly Frosted, Lightly Toned

1913-S 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. Fortunately for collectors of the Barber quarter series, it appears as though a cadre of dedicated collectors by the year 1913 was well aware of some of the low-mintage coins issuing from the San Francisco Mint as "modern issues." Although the most recent coin mania to sweep the United States was for the 25 Anniversary five-piece American Silver Eagle sets, it is far from a new phenomenon. In 1909 it was the launch of the tiny-mintage 1909-S VDB cents that may have spurred a new generation of mintmark collectors.
At any rate, the 1913-S Barber quarter may be had, for a price, in Gem and finer condition, although the populations thin markedly above that point. Most of the pieces show a fine obverse die crack running from the 3 in the date across the tip of the bust to the nearby star. This Gem offers superb mint frost tinged with speckled golden-rose toning. No marks of note appear, and strike softness is limited to the area along the forehead and the hair of Liberty. Population: 18 in 65, 15 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23ZW, PCGS# 5666)
