    1913-S Quarter, MS66+
    Only Four Finer at PCGS

1913-S 25C MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The 1913-S needs no introduction to specialists in the Barber quarter series, but even so, it is somewhat more available in the higher Mint State grades compared to its counterparts, the 1896-S and 1901-S, despite a smaller mintage. We suspect a small hoard or two were stashed away, perhaps in San Francisco or certainly close by, shortly after these coins were minted. Such a phenomenon is easily understood when one considers the revelation that the general public underwent only four years previously, that a tiny "S" mintmark could be worth a fancy premium when attached to a 1909 VDB cent.

Nonetheless, this MS66+ PCGS 1913-S quarter is a coin that will not soon be bettered, as PCGS has seen only 11 in MS66, this piece and one other in MS66+, and there are but four finer (1/13). This piece is well-struck throughout both sides, with silvery centers ceding to charcoal and russet patina near the rims. A few tiny ticks on Liberty's neck appear to preclude an even finer grade, but there is eye appeal to spare.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23ZW, PCGS# 5666)
