    Description

    1915-S Quarter, MS67
Tied for Finest Certified, Ex: Eliasberg
    Old Green Label Holder

1915-S 25C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. This is a remarkably bright example despite pale lavender-gray toning that deepens slightly over the reverse. Both sides are satiny and mark-free with nicely impressed devices. Some faint die polishing lines, well-hidden by the toning, are present in the lower-right obverse field but have little effect on the luster and do not impede the grade. Housed in an old green label holder with the CAC approval and Eliasberg pedigree.

Population Data (4/15): This MS67 piece is tied for finest at PCGS with two other submissions. The finest at NGC are 11 MS66, one with a Star designation.

Heritage Commentary: As far as the San Francisco Mint was concerned, the Barber quarter passed into history with a limited delivery of 704,000 pieces in 1915. As befits the series, the rigors of circulation sent most of these coins into oblivion. A precious few specimens, the present example included, were, nonetheless, preserved for the benefit of today's advanced specialist.

Consignor Commentary: The Eliasberg coin. I rate it average for the grade as there are several small lines (die scratches?) on the planchet extending from the 9 in the date under the other numerals and under the point of Liberty's neck up towards her chin. Otherwise a fine example.

Provenance: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 4/1997), lot 1617; Philadelphia Signature (Heritage, 8/2000), lot 5864; purchased from Rare Coins of New Hampshire (10/2000).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2424, PCGS# 5672)
