1916-D Quarter, MS66
Eye-Appealing Type Coin
1916-D 25C MS66 NGC. CAC. This is an especially lustrous,
well-preserved example of this available final-year Denver issue,
showing intermingled shades of forest-green, olive, champagne,
russet, and amber-red present throughout the fields. The eagle's
right (facing) talons and the fletchings show the only mentionable
strike deficiency.Population Data (9/15): NGC reports 13 submissions finer -- 11 in MS67 (including Plus- and Star-designated coins) and two in MS68. PCGS shows 15 submitted in MS67 but none finer.
Heritage Commentary: The 1916-D is the ideal type coin in the Barber quarter series, struck to the extent of more than 6.5 million pieces. The large production was a result of the Treasury submitting an order for some 4 million quarter dollars near the end of 1916. The Denver Mint was directed to cease coinage of all other unnecessary denominations and focus on quarter production for the remainder of the year to help meet the demand. The order of 4 million coins, however, seems to have been excessive for the actual needs of commerce, as many Uncirculated examples of this date survive for modern-day collectors.
Provenance: Purchased from David Lawrence Rare Coins (7/2002).(Registry values: N2998)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2426, PCGS# 5674)
Weight: 6.25 grams
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
