Description
Incredibly Rare Gold Medal of Charles VI
Very Possibly Unique in Private Hands
Flanders. Charles VI "Birth of Archduke Leopold" gold Medallic
23 Ducats 1716 Choice AU - Damage, Kenis-4. 53mm/82g. By
Roettiers. Draped bust of Charles IV right; CAROLUS VI · IMPERATOR
FLANDRIÆ COMES at legend. Rev. Presentation of Archduke Leopold
with arms surrounding at center; De Cæsare RoMano reX nas CItUR at
legends with date in chronogram. Reflective in the fields with
frost on the raised design and moderate handling in the fields. A
repair in the lower right quadrant of the reverse, and a test punch
at 3 o'clock on the edge are noted and were surely made to confirm
the alloy as gold all the way through. Extremely rare as an issue,
especially in gold, with Kenis referencing gold, silver and bronze
strikings. No archived sales have been located in any metal
however, with the closest comparable medal being the sale of
Kenis-3 by German auction house Kunker in February 2014 for 28,000
Euros hammer (or approximately $37,889 at time of sale). That
piece, although in similar overall condition, did not show signs of
the aforementioned metal test. Unquestionably of the highest
rarity, and belonging in a fine cabinet of medallic multiple
ducats.
