Description

Rare 1863 Belgian Gold Pattern

Leopold I gold Specimen Pattern 20 Francs 1863 SP62 PCGS, Brussels mint, KM-Unl., Fr-Unl., Dupriez-895 (R3). By L. Wiener. Inscribed edge. A seldom-seen Pattern strike used to develop the one-year type from 1865, its production curtailed due to Leopold's death that same year. A beautiful specimen, this example displays Wiener's motifs at their fullest sculpt, every lock on Leopold's head laid bare for admiration. The occasional set of adjustment marks, combined with the harvest gold silhouetting, adds a dynamic element to the neat flan. This is the only representative graded across certification companies, and with no promise of this Pattern type appearing in the near future, we expect considerable bidding activity for this Belgian gold rarity.
