1596 Betts-16B Medal, VF35
Dutch Maritime Commerce With The New World

1596 Medal "Reopening Maritime Commerce," Silver, Betts-16B, VF35 PCGS. Light-steel coloration is highlighted by hints of russet-brown and contains very few abrasions, even for the grade. This medal commemorated trade between the Netherlands and New World colonies, particularly the Portuguese, and was struck on a massive 52.2mm planchet that matched those used for double talers of the era. Multiple die marriages exist, including examples with no date, examples dated 1594, and examples, such as the present offering, dated 1596.
