Description
1702 Betts-94 Medal, AU58
American Treasure Captured at Vigo Bay
1702 Medal American Treasure Captured at Vigo Bay, Betts-94,
AU58 PCGS. 47.3 mm, 37.2 gm. By Georg Friedrich Nürnberger,
Georg Hautsch, and Martin Brunner. The obverse shows Neptune in his
seahorse-drawn car and sea-cherubs holding British, German, and
Dutch shields supporting a scroll inscribed by Victory with the
names of 24 French ships captured in the harbor of Vigo. On the
reverse, nine allied ships advance in tight formation toward the
chain that stretched across the entrance to Vigo Bay and protected
the ships sheltering within. This design incorporates an amazing
amount of exquisite detail chronicling a catastrophic
Spanish-French defeat. Lost to the British and Dutch was the entire
treasure fleet that had survived a perilous transatlantic voyage
only to be destroyed in a supposedly secure home port.Ex: John J. Ford, Jr., Part 13 (Stack's, 1/2006), lot 792; The John W. Adams Collection (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 3656.
