Description
1760 Betts-429 Medal, SP62
Popular and Scarce Montreal Taken
1760 Medal Montreal Taken, Betts-429, Eimer-679, SP62 PCGS.
40.7 mm, 422.9 grains. Brilliant silver gray surfaces and finely
reflective fields are largely devoid of toning, save for some
deeper regions around the devices. Lightly hairlined from a
long-ago polishing, some minor field marks, nice sharpness and
overall eye appeal. No collaring mark noted, struck from a more
textured single-piece collar on a quite thin planchet. The usual
double striking is apparent at the peripheries. Among the SPAC
medals, the Montreal Taken Medal has long been a favorite. Its
devices were engraved by John Kirk in 1761, with the obverse
featuring a river-god accosted by a most unusual looking beaver and
the reverse showing a crestfallen Canadienne. It is at once a
commemorative of the conquest of the whole of Canada and of the
taking of the city of Montreal. It is scarcer than the Quebec Taken
Medal and of similar scarcity to the Canada Subdued medal.Ex: F. Samuels (4/1963); The John W. Adams Collection of French and Indian War Medals (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3925.
